On today’s episode of Live Lean TV, Jessica and I share our 5 best healthy airplane travel snack ideas, as well as why you shouldn’t freak out over it.
This is another great episode from our #WayBackWednesday series, where we highlight the best questions from previous episodes of our #AskLiveLeanTV Q&A show.
This question is from #AskLiveLeanTV Ep. 002.
@FemkePointl on Twitter asks: what are the best healthy airplane travel snack ideas when traveling by plane for 24 hours? Also what are good options for food at airports?
This is a great question that we get asked all the time.
When Jessica works with our 1-on-1 online coaching clients, she has them send her pictures of what snacks they are bringing on the airplane.
We also often post photos of the healthy airplane travel snacks that we eat on our @LiveLeanTV Instagram stories.
Usually these on the go snacks are not going to be the highest protein foods, as they are not the easiest foods to travel with.
You could bring a cooked chicken breast in a plastic storage bag or container, however it’s not the most convenient option.
Here are the 5 best healthy airplane travel snack ideas that we usually recommend.
We love snacking on fruits like apples or any other fruit that doesn’t have a peel.
This means they are easy to just grab and eat.
Nuts are also great for traveling as they don’t have a bad odor and they don’t go bad.
Simply add dry raw nuts to a plastic storage bag and enjoy.
If you’re looking for a healthier protein idea at the airport, beef jerky is a decent protein source.
Just make sure you buy the healthy beef jerky.
We did a Food Wars episode on how to find the healthiest Beef Jerky here.
You can also add protein powder to a plastic bag and add it to your water bottle on the airplane.
I’ve traveled with protein powder in a plastic bag plenty of times, and have never been questioned by TSA.
Another snack idea is to prepare your own healthy baked goods such as macadamia nut bites, coconut cacao chip macaroons, and chocolate coconut date bites.
Here is a step-by-step cooking recipe video for all of these quick and healthy snack ideas.
Sure you can buy a protein bar at the grocery store or airport, but they may not be the healthiest option.
Take control back of the food you’re feeding yourself, by making this no bake, paleo protein bar recipe.
If you asked other fitness coaches for their best healthy airplane travel snack ideas, many of them would probably recommend you bring a cooked chicken breast in a cooler or in Tupperware with some ice.
Sure this is definitely a healthy snack option, however it is not a requirement.
This is where our Live Lean philosophy differentiates ourselves from that segment of the fitness industry.
We are different because we teach people how to Live Lean 365 days a year.
Our advice on fitness and nutrition is not for short-term and temporary fixes.
We make fitness and nutrition fit into your lifestyle, rather than making it your entire life.
Since you are not on an airplane every day, you can get away with eating bad food at the airport once in a while.
However, if you are one of the few people that is at the airport every day, you have to tighten it up, and focus on making better food choices.
Most fast food restaurants at the airport have healthy salad options with grilled chicken, protein smoothies, and protein bars.
In other words, although these may not be the healthiest options, they are still considered a healthy enough option, given the current situation.
So don’t limit yourself and get all worked up over it.
It’s not the end of the world if you eat an occasional sandwich at Subway or any other fast food restaurant.
Remember, it’s just one meal.
No.
That should be obvious.
Just be smart.
I hope you would know which unhealthy foods, like candy, are obviously unnecessary to eat at the airport.
However, when it comes to the best healthy airplane travel snack ideas, bring the 5 foods mentioned earlier, or grab a grilled chicken salad, a healthy protein bar, or protein smoothie at the airport.
If the flight is short, a lot of times you don’t need to have any snacks on the airplane or at the airport.
Rather than snacking at the airport, simply eat a hunger crushing healthy breakfast before your flight, and then have a healthy lunch when you get to your destination.
If it’s a really long flight, just pack:
Then relax, you’ll be fine.
