On today’s episode of Live Lean TV, I’m sharing the 8 gluten free foods making you gain weight, as well as why gluten free foods can still make you fat.

What Is Gluten?

If you want to learn more about what gluten is, and what it means to be gluten intolerant or gluten sensitive, I covered this in a previous video blog post called, What Is Gluten And Why Is It Bad For Some People?

This post also includes the 5 sneaky sources of gluten.

What Is Gluten And Why Is It Bad For Some People?

The point of this post is to bring to light the difference between healthy whole foods, that are naturally gluten free, and the packaged products on the grocery store shelves, that use gluten free alternative ingredients.

A Gluten Free Food Label Does Not Mean It’s Healthy

I’ll be up front.

There are numerous food products with big food labels screaming gluten free.

Don’t get brainwashed by all the gluten free hype.

Just because a food is gluten free, it does not guarantee it’s healthy, nor does it mean it’ll help you lose weight.

Unfortunately, many of these alternate gluten free ingredients are simply empty calories, that are making you gain weight.

In addition to this, the other unhealthy ingredients inside these gluten free foods will also make you pack on the pounds.

Even though the product is gluten free, it may contain more calories from unhealthy, inflammation causing omega 6 vegetable oils, including canola oil.

These gluten free foods may also contain a higher level of carbohydrates, including sugar, which will crash your blood sugar and spike insulin production.

How To Prevent Blood Sugar Spikes And Improve Insulin Resistance

Eating too many of these gluten free foods may lead to insulin resistance and fat gain.

If the box says it’s gluten free, I highly recommend you spend 5-10 seconds to turn it around and read the ingredients list and the nutrition facts label.

8 Gluten Free Foods Making You Gain Weight

This is especially true when you’re buying these 8 unhealthy foods with a gluten free label:

  1. Bagels
  2. Bread
  3. Cake
  4. Cookies
  5. Crackers
  6. Granola
  7. Pancake Mix
  8. Pizza

In addition to these 8 foods, you should also make it a habit to look at the ingredients and nutrition facts label, of all pre-mixed gluten free products, found in the interior aisles at the grocery store.

Busting 5 Misleading Nutrition Label Claims

Many of these refined pre-packaged foods contain alternative gluten free ingredients, including:

  • Brown rice flour
  • Cornstarch
  • Potato starch

In addition to being aware of what food manufacturers are removing from the product, it’s just as important to pay attention to what they’re adding back into the product.

Often times these gluten free ingredients can be more calorie dense, and higher on the glycemic index, than the gluten ingredients they’re replacing.

Bottom Line On Gluten Free Foods

Here is your main takeaway, when it comes to gluten free foods.

I always recommend you take back control of the foods you’re eating.

You can do this by learning how fun and enjoyable it is to bake your own homemade gluten free versions of these foods, using fat burning and natural whole food ingredients.
