On today’s episode of Live Lean TV, we answer a question from an underweight viewer on how to get toned after losing weight.
This was a question from #AskLiveLeanTV Ep. 010.
Tanny Brito on YouTube asks: If a person is trying to re-gain lost weight, what type of exercise routine would you suggest for a very underweight person that likes to exercise to maintain a “toned” body?
One of the questions we get asked all the time is, “what is the best program for me if I want to accomplish [insert goal here]?”
Since we’ve been asked this question so many times, we decided to come out with the Live Lean Body Quiz.
This is a quick, 4 question quiz that you can take to be directed to the best program based on your:

Now let’s get into today’s answer.
Although it’s a little unclear based on the question, it seems like this person has experienced unwanted weight loss.
If you want to re-gain healthy weight, you have to lift weights girl.
I know you mentioned “toned” in brackets, so I’m assuming there may be a fear of lifting weights.
But please don’t let the stereotypical thought that lifting weights will make you bulky, scare you.
In order to add the right type of healthy weight, you have to lift weights to build muscle mass.
A lot of people approach weight loss incorrectly, because they don’t understand the importance of body composition.
People incorrectly think to lose weight, all you have to do is lose weight on the weight scale, regardless of where that weight is coming from.
In other words, as long as the number on the weight scale goes down, you’re happy.
The same thing is true for if you’re trying to gain weight.
They incorrectly think as long as the number on the weight scale goes up, they’re happy.
However, to gain or lose weight the healthy way, you have to break the weight down into body composition.
In other words, figure out if the weight loss or weight gain is coming from lean muscle or fat.
This is why I recommend you stick to lifting weights and make sure you are eating enough calories from food.
Take the Live Lean Body Quiz to find the specific type of workout that is best for your gender, goals, fitness level, and access to equipment.
Even if you don’t have access to traditional dumbbells or barbells, any form of resistance training will help.
There are a lot of different types of resistance that you can use.
Besides dumbbells and barbells, resistance training can also include:
But to build muscle size, I would recommend sticking primarily to traditional weights, such as dumbbells and barbells, not just bodyweight training.
You can only progress your bodyweight workouts so far until you hit muscle building plateaus.
However, since your goal is getting “toned”, you can still get to a point of having a very toned physique from calisthenics type workouts.
When it comes to the best exercise routine, it’s very important to narrow in on your goals.
For example, just saying you want to be toned is not enough.
There are different levels of “toned”, so how toned do you really want to be?
Toned just seems to be the word used when someone says, “I don’t want to get bulky, I just want to get toned”.
But in all honesty, who really knows what “toned” means?
Some women think a Victoria Secret’s model looks toned, while other people think she looks anorexic and skinny.
So it really depends on what your opinion of what toned looks like.
If you are very underweight, and need to gain weight, it comes down to a combination of your calorie intake from food and your exercise routine.
Regardless of the type of exercise routine you’re doing, if you’re still not eating enough, you’re going to have a hard time putting that weight back on.
In a nutshell, take the Live Lean Body Quiz, then use the programs that we recommend to get you toned.
Hopefully this helps.
