On today’s episode of Live Lean TV, I’m sharing 4 abs training tips on how to get your abs to pop out and show more.
This is another great episode from our #WayBackWednesday series, where we highlight the best questions from previous episodes of our #AskLiveLeanTV Q&A show.
This question is from #AskLiveLeanTV Ep. 059.
If you really want to learn how to get your abs to pop out and show more, make sure you check out the end of this post.
Anna Graeff from Facebook says: I’ve been working on them for years, but I have never been able to get my abs to “pop”. From everything I’ve seen it sounds like I need to lose more body fat, which means going into a caloric deficit. I’ve always been naturally slim, and already weigh very little for my height (5′ 3″ and 103 pounds), so I feel like it would not be a good idea for me to lose weight. Do you have any recommendations for what I should do? Love you guys by the way, and Kyla is adorable.
Okay, so you’re right.
Your weight sounds like it’s right on point for your height, so I would not suggest losing any more weight.
Here are our recommendations.
You need to build muscle, not just in your abs, but all over your body.
This means focusing on increasing your lean muscle mass.
Just because you are 5′ 3″ and only 103 pounds, it’s not necessarily just about the 103 pounds.
What’s more important is your overall body composition.
In other words, what percentage of those 103 pounds, are made up of lean body mass.
Simply think of your lean body mass as the weight coming from your muscles and bones.
Then figure out what percentage of that is from stored body fat.
Look at it this way, you could still be 103 pounds, but your body fat percentage could still be very high, since you’ve never focused on building muscle before.
I would also have you incorporating more weighted abs exercises into your training program.
Maybe you are only doing a lot of bodyweight reps during your abs training.
So when you do train your abs, try adding extra resistance to your abs exercises, just like you would do during a muscle building hypertrophy style lifting workout.
Adding resistance can help you get a higher quality contraction with your abs exercises, rather than completing countless sloppy bodyweight reps, until you’re blue in the face.
You want to get good and hard contractions and then let your abs recover.
The quality of your contractions are key.
Even if you’re completing your abs exercises, you may not be performing the exercise in a proper way.
To get your abs to pop out and show more, you have to breath properly, contract hard, and complete the abs exercise with proper form.
Focus on quality reps rather than completing countless lower quality reps just to hit a high rep count.
By completing all your exercises with proper way, you will get the most out of your direct abs training workouts.
Next time you’re training abs, take a video of yourself to see if you can see your abs contracting.
By doing this, you can see if your abs contracting as hard as they should be.
If you don’t see a hard contraction, your need to really work on correcting your form, breathing, and training with inward intention.
I’m not saying your form is wrong.
I’m just saying you may need to take it to the next level, to get the results you’re looking for, by getting your abs to pop out and show more.
