On today’s episode of Live Lean TV, I’m sharing 4 tips to overcome hunger cravings from a fast metabolism.
This is another Throwback Thursday post from our #TBT Q&A series.
These are questions from our #LLTV Q&A series, filmed for our Live Lean TV YouTube channel back in 2012.
Today’s question is about having a fast metabolism, and how you overcome the hunger cravings that come with that.
If you have a slow metabolism, initially you may not have any empathy for people with a fast metabolism.
But trust me, some people have a hard time gaining weight and building muscle because of their fast metabolism.
So, here are my best tips on how to deal with always being hungry, and the hunger cravings from a fast metabolism.
You said building muscle burns calories all day and speeds up your metabolism. But how do I handle the hunger that comes with a fast metabolism?
Great question, and I feel your pain.
Anytime I go through a heavy leg workout or a high intensity interval training session, I’m starving the whole day.
But the key to this, is to not binge on the quick junk food that maybe sitting on your shelves.
The key is to fuel your muscles and your body with foods high protein and healthy fat.
Protein and healthy fat are the two macronutrients that are the most satiating forms of calories, that you can eat.
So feed your body with whole foods that are mainly comprised of protein and fat.
This will keep you feeling full for longer periods of time.
This will also reduce your cravings for sugary refined carbohydrates.
By binging on unhealthy food, it will take you further away from your goals, and ruin all that hard work you put in at the gym.
Always stick with high protein foods and healthy fats when you’re feeling hungry.
When it comes to a fast metabolism, to overcome your hunger cravings you just have to eat more.
There’s been some research on this from the University of Vermont.
Having a fast metabolism, equates to an extra 100-400 calories a day.
So if you have a fast metabolism, you could be burning an extra 100-400 calories, compared to somebody who doesn’t have a fast metabolism.
Again, that simply means, if you’re looking to build muscle, or maintain the muscle that you have, you just have to eat more food.
Even if you have a fast metabolism, if you continuously eat crappy food, it’s can potentially turn into fat gain.
Eating unhealthy food can also make you even hungrier, because crappy food can increase cravings.
The key is to consume those extra 100-400 calories by eating foods high in protein, high in healthy fat, and high in fiber.
This will not only fuel your muscle gains, it’ll also reduce hunger and fill you up.
A quick and simple way to consume more healthy calories, is to consume an additional smoothie, filled with higher calorie foods:
You can even eat a tablespoon of coconut oil or add coconut oil to your coffee like I do.
Another way to decrease your hunger cravings from a fast metabolism is to eat more meals.
In other words, more frequent meals.
For example, try eating every a meal or snack every 3 hours.
If the thought of eating every 3 hours sounds like too much of a commitment, just eat bigger portion sizes with your meals.
To do this, add a portion of food to your plate, then add another 1/2 of a serving.
When it’s on your plate, this will make you eat more during that meal.
That way you won’t have to eat as many meals throughout the day.
But remember, the makeup of the food on your plate is important.
These are the foods that will keep you feeling fuller, longer.
If your meals and snacks are typically higher in refined carbohydrates, this will just quickly spike your blood sugar.
After the quick spike, your blood sugar will quickly come crashing back down, and your body’s going to crave more sugar.
That’s the key.
It’s not just eating more food, it’s eating more of the foods that will fill you up.
Again, these are foods that are high in protein, high in fat, and high in fiber.
Those are my best tips to safely add in calories, without adding extra body fat, and making yourself even more hungry.
So hopefully this helped you out.
