On today’s episode of Live Lean TV, we answer a question from a viewer who asked, is coffee before a workout in the morning enough for your body to train hard?
This was a question from #AskLiveLeanTV Ep. 010.
sarasmile1984 on Snapchat asks: Hi guys, I’m really loving these types of videos, and I’m so pumped that the vlogs are making a comeback! My question is, is coffee before a workout in the morning enough for your system? I like to workout in the morning around 9am, so I have my coffee around 8am, and I’m not hungry until 10am. I drink a protein shake immediately after my workout. You guys are such an inspiration and keep me motivated. Thank you for that!
That’s awesome that you’re loving the vlogs.

Now let’s get to the answer.
For some people, eating before a workout feels terrible, as it makes them feel sluggish and lethargic.
Based on these feelings, they probably won’t get in a good workout.
If you’re one of those people, try skipping or postponing your food until after your workout.
If you’re having a great workout with just coffee in your system, and you don’t feel lethargic and depleted, there shouldn’t be a problem with it.
This may be an overall better approach for you since you’ll be getting in a better workout.
However, if you’re unsure of which way works best for you, test it out.
Once you test out a few workouts fasted vs fed, stick with the approach that gave you the best workout.
The other important factor in deciding whether to workout fasted or fed, comes down to what your goals are.
Based on your goals, there can be a big point of differentiation in our answer.
However, since we don’t know what your specific goals are, we’ll provide you with both sides to the answer.
If your goal is to lose weight, working out fasted can be a good way to achieve it.
Even though you’re training fasted, the caffeine in the coffee will provide you with energy.
The caffeine in coffee is also beneficial to burning fat as it can help increase the speed at which fatty acids are pumped into the bloodstream to be burned for energy.
This is why having caffeine before a workout is good for fat loss.
If you’re looking to build muscle, and you don’t build muscle very easily because of your ectomorph body type, it may be better for you to have food in your system.
By working out fueled, you’re decreasing the risk of putting your body in an excessively catabolic state, where you may burn muscle during your workout.
Based on your feedback in the question, more than likely, you’re probably doing a really good job smoking your workout, with just coffee in your system.
If this is the case, you should be fine with only having a coffee before a workout.
Just make sure your approach works for your goals, and you’re loving the results you’re seeing.
When it comes to the rest of your nutrition for the day, it’s very important to make sure you are hitting your total daily calories and macronutrients goals.
Hitting your daily calorie and macronutrient goals are more important than the timing of your meals.
Remember, skipping breakfast is different than just delaying breakfast.
