On today’s episode of Live Lean TV, we’re comparing LIIS vs HIIT, what training is better for endurance events, including a marathon or ironman triathlon?
Today’s viewer question is from #AskLiveLeanTV Ep. 018.
Here’s today’s viewer question:
@MarisolCadriel from Twitter asks: What’s better for aerobic training for endurance events, including marathons and Ironman distance triathlons, long and slow or HIIT cardio?
Jess: Long and slow cardio, also known as LISS cardio, would be better because if you’re trying to be good at endurance, you need to train for endurance.
Brad: Agreed. If you’re training for a marathon, HIIT, also known as high intensity interval training, can have its place, however you should be doing what you’re training for.
Jess: Yeah, some HIIT can be helpful, however the majority of your training so mimic the exact distance and sport you’re trying to be good at.
Brad: To clarify, if you’re training for a marathon, we’re not saying you should go run the distance of a marathon tomorrow.
When you start your endurance training, you have to chunk that big distance down into smaller increments, then slowly build on it.
For example, today we’re going run a mile, then next week we’re going to run 1.5 miles.
Note: I am not an expert in endurance training, I’ve never run a marathon, nor will I ever run a marathon.
However, from my previous training and certifications, I know if you’re going to train specifically for something, do that style of training.
Jess: Endurance training definitely creates a different look on your body. It’s not really our passion or what we’re into.
However, if endurance training is your thing and it is what you’re into, then that’s how you should be training.
You can have some HIIT workouts in there, however if it’s all you do, you’re not going to be prepared when you get to marathon day.
Brad: HIIT workouts are fast, explosive, and short.
They prepare you to run away from the saber-toothed tiger, with a quick burst of speed, because if you’re not fast, you’re done.
Jess: However, you don’t need any of that explosive energy when you do a marathon.
You need to pace yourself.
That’s how you are going to make it through all 26.2 miles of the marathon.
