On today’s episode of Live Lean TV, we’re answering a viewer question who asked, should you have a protein shake within 30 minutes of workout or is food good enough?
Today’s viewer question is from #AskLiveLeanTV Ep. 021.
Here’s today’s viewer question:
sarvinuk from Snapchat asks:
Do we have to have a protein shake within 30 minutes of a workout, or can you just have some food if you’re hungry?
Brad: Within 30 minutes is optimal, because that’s when you’re in that window where you want to restore your body, break it out of the catabolic stage, and put it back in the anabolic muscle building stage.
However, it’s not going to be the end of the world if you don’t do it.
Jess: You don’t have to do anything.
Brad: Yeah, you don’t have to do anything, but like I said, it’s the most optimal way to do it.
So that would be important.
When it comes to post workout food rather than a protein shake, yes, you can just have food.
Food is a really good source of everything.
However, the thing with food is your body takes longer to break it down and assimilate it and to get the amino acids from the food.
Since it takes a little bit longer, that’s why it’s not as optimal as a processed protein powder.
That’s why I would go with protein powder, if you can.

Jess: Yeah, use protein powder just during that post workout time.
