On today’s motivational episode, lets talk about the obvious reason why you’re NOT transforming.
It can be summarized by this definition of insanity from Albert Einstein…
Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
Let that sink in for a second.
Now think about how this definition applies to your journey in life, especially your fitness journey.
I mean, lets be real, if we applied this definition to the health and fitness world, there would be a lot of insane people out there.
When it comes to fitness, what are the same old actions that you are continually doing, over and over again, yet expecting different results?
Lets look at this common example of a conversation I have all the time with people frustrated with their lack of fitness results.
John says: “Hey Brad I just don’t know what to do. I really want to lose this flabby belly fat, but nothing seems to work.”
Me: “High five John, you just set a goal. It’s not the clearest goal, but it’s something to work towards.”
I then ask John the following million dollar question:
Me: “Since you made this goal John, how have your daily behaviors changed?”
John looks confused.
Me: “What I mean by this is, what are you doing differently now than what you did when you started gaining the belly fat?”
John looks at me with an embarrassed smirk.
John: “I got a gym membership”.
Me: “Good John, that’s another positive step. How many days a week does your workout program have you going to the gym?”.
John looks confused.
John: “Workout program? I just go whenever I feel up for it. It’s usually once to twice a week”.
Me: “When was the last time you went to the gym John?”
John: “2 weeks ago, I’ve been busy.”
Me: “Ok, although that’s not optimal, it’s better than nothing. So tell me more about what your workouts look like.”
John: “Well I walk on the treadmill for 20-30 minutes, then I get pretty bored, so I go do some bicep curls and crunches. It’s really all I’m comfortable doing.”
Brad: “Ok. We’ll work on that. How about your nutrition? Are you eating differently now that you have a goal?”
John: “What do you mean?”
Brad: “John, nutrition is king to losing belly fat. Are you focusing on eating more nutritious foods and cooking healthy meals and snacks?
John: “I don’t like cooking. I did try eating at healthier fast food restaurants for the first few days, but then I got tired of it after not seeing any changes.”
Brad: “So you went back to eating the same foods that got you the belly fat in the first place?”
John: “Yeah, pretty much. But I thought working out would help. I really thought this would be easier than it is.”
Brad: “Well it’s easy to get fat, but to transform and improve your healthy, it’s going to mean you have to change what you’re doing. You can’t keep doing what you’ve always done and expect to get different results. That’s the definition of insanity John.”
John: “You’re right. So what do I need to do?”
Brad: “Well first you need to get deep on WHY you need to change. You need to get clear on why it needs to happen now. Then it’s time to get on a structured plan, then put it the work. The time is now is John, but before you can achieve this goal, you have to commit to making changes to your lifestyle.”
So there you go Live Lean Nation.
If you’ve ever wondered why you’re NOT transforming, it’s time for you to figure out the changes you need to make in your lifestyle.
In order to change where you are, you must change the things that got you there in the first place.
If you don’t know what that is, I wrote a book called Think and Live Lean, that provides all the action steps to adopt the Live Lean Mindset.
That’s what most people struggle with when it comes to health and fitness.
Mindset and a plan.
Once you have those things in place, all that’s left is the work.
And the works becomes much easier when you go at it with the right mindset and plan.
