What vegetables are worth logging the calories for? Carrots? Sweet Potato?

What Vegetables Are Worth Logging The Calories For?

Jess: Yeah, you guys know that most vegetables are considered free foods, and we don’t log the calories for those.

But there are some vegetables, like the starchy ones, that do count.

When it comes to carrots, I don’t necessarily count the calories for them, because I don’t eat them that much, so the amount is small.

Brad: If you wanted to really dial it in, I would say yes, count the calories from carrots.

But in my experience, I personally have never logged the calories for carrots.

Jess: Yeah.

When I was doing fitness competitions I wouldn’t have carrots on my menu.

If I did, I would have logged them and would have probably used them as a sweet potato replacement.

But I would usually choose sweet potatoes instead.

Sweet potato is one vegetable that you have to log the calories for.

Brad: Definitely log the calories for potatoes.

Jess: Yes, white potatoes for sure.

Brad: That’s really the only vegetable.

Jess: Other types of squash, like a winter squash or butternut squash.

Brad: Yeah, honestly I’ve never logged the calories for squash either.

Jess: Yeah, but you don’t eat it daily.

Brad: No I don’t, but if I was, and I was tracking for a week just to check where I am, I probably wouldn’t.

But once again, if you really want to get it dialed in, then yes, for squash I would count the calories.

Jess: Just think of all the starchy root type vegetables.

Brad: Yeah.

Jess: The things that grow in the ground are the vegetables you are probably going to log.

But like we said, if it’s not something you’re eating every single day, and you’re not eating a ton of it, then I wouldn’t worry about it.

But if it is a staple, and it makes up a big portion of your plate, then yes I would count it.

Brad: Yeah.
