On today’s episode of Live Lean TV, we’re sharing why training legs is important for fat loss and muscle gain, even if your legs are big.
Today’s viewer question is from #AskLiveLeanTV Ep. 018.
Here’s today’s viewer question:
DEX2REAL on Snapchat asks: Is it true when working out legs, it forces other muscle groups to grow also?
Brad: Here’s a story about when I wrote workout programs for a few of my buddies. One of them, who had a gut said:
“I’m a big dude, and my legs are already too big. I want you to design me a program, but I don’t want you designing any leg workouts in there.”
That’s when I sat him down and said, when doing squats and deadlifts, it doesn’t mean you’re just targeting your legs with these workouts, it’s an overall body experience.
Not only do leg exercises, such as squats, target multiple muscle groups in your body, it also creates a hormonal reaction in your body to get the fat burning engines going.
Compound leg exercises are also going to burn more calories than a biceps curl.
This means you are going to be burning fat all over your body.
When it comes to training legs, every single person should be training them, regardless if you’re already big in the lower body, or not.
Jess: Absolutely I agree with that.
I’ve had females come to me who have a small upper body and a heavy lower body.
Based on this, they don’t want to train legs because they don’t want them to get any bigger.
Here’s my reply:
“Girl, if you don’t train your legs, you’re not going to get any smaller and more symmetrical anywhere”.
Your legs are your biggest, most powerful muscle group.
In order to build muscle throughout your body, you need to stimulate your largest most powerful muscle.
Brad: Big heavy compound movements, including squats and deadlifts, are the types of exercises that create the testosterone boost and growth hormone release in your body.
Bottom line, get into the gym and train your legs.
Jess: Training your legs not only makes you leaner, it also makes you more balanced overall, with a better hormonal environment.
